Art isn’t for people like me. It’s for those posh folk.
Funny, isn’t it?
Somewhere along the way,
art got dressed up,
locked away and
made to feel like it
belonged to someone else.
But before you knew what
posh was, you were
making things, inventing
worlds, drawing on
walls and turning
absolutely nothing
into something.
You didn’t need
permission then.
Who told you
that you needed it now?

I wouldn’t know the first thing about art.
YOU KNOW IT.
You know when
something takes
your breath away.
You know when a song takes
you somewhere else. You know
when a room feels right,
when somebody moves you,
when something makes you
laugh or leaves you thinking
for days. So you’ve been
experiencing art all
your life. You just
didn’t know you
were allowed
to call it that.

You could put a painting in front of me and I wouldn’t have a clue what I was looking at.
GOOD!!
For once, you can look at something without somebody telling you
what to think.
Forget the title,the price, the
artist’s reputation.
What do you see?
What does it
remind you of? What does
it stir up? You don’t need to
pass an exam to have a feeling.

What if I
don’t like
the art?
THEN DON’T LIKE IT!!
Who said you had to?
You’re allowed to disagree with
the artist. You’re allowed to laugh
at it, question it, even hate it.
The interesting bit is
discovering why.
You might learn more about yourself
from a painting you hate than one
you love.

I could never create something like that.
PERHAPS NOT!
But you’ve created a life, haven’t you?
Made decisions, overcome
things, loved people, changed
your mind, started again.
You’ve been inventing
yourself for years.
Art is one way of making
something visible.
You’ve been creating
things nobody else
could create in
exactly the same way.

Isn’t it all subjective
anyway? One person
loves it, another
thinks it’s rubbish
Absolutely.
And isn’t that wonderful?
Two people can stand in front of the same thing and walk away with completely different worlds inside them. The artwork hasn’t changed. They have. Now imagine having a conversation where nobody needs to win, nobody needs to be right, and everybody has something worth saying.

What am I supposed to say when I’m looking at art?
I don’t want
to sound stupid.
Not what you think
you’re supposed to think
If it reminds
you of your childhood,
tell me.
If it makes you uncomfortable,
tell me.
If you think it looks like
something your dog knocked
over,tell me that too.
I’d rather hear your
honest reaction
than a hundred
clever words you
don’t believe.
TELL ME WHAT
YOU REALLY THINK!

What difference is looking at a few paintings going to make to my life?
MAYBE NONE!
Maybe you go home
exactly as you arrived.
But maybe something catches
you off guard.
Maybe it brings back a memory
you’ve buried, makes you
see someone differently,
or reminds you of a
part of yourself you’ve
forgotten. You don’t
always know what
you’re looking for
until something finds you.

How can a painting be worth thousands, millions even? It’s only a painting.
MANY REASONS!
Sometimes it’s about rarity, history, reputation
and the market.
Value is a strange thing, isn’t it?
A photograph can be worth
nothing to the world
and everything to you.
A child’s drawing can
be priceless to a parent.
Money can tell you
what somebody will pay.
It can’t tell you everything
something means.
Be honest.
Are you trying to turn me into an art lover?
Not at all.
I’m curious about person who asks questions, takes risks, changes their mind, laughs, remembers, imagines.
Perhaps you’ll fall in love with a painting. Perhaps you’ll discover you hate modern art.
Perhaps you’ll discover something about yourself. I’m not here to tell you what art means.
I’m here to find out what happens when you meet it on your own terms.

10 conversations about creativity, human freedom and the relationship we've forgotten how to have. The artist creates. The audience experiences. But what if we've misunderstood the relationship between them? What if art was never meant to be something that one person makes and another person buys, but a way for human beings to understand themselves, each other and the world they share?
