WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT ART?
You shouldn’t.
Not if you don’t care about people, life, or making a contribution that actually means something.

The closest I get to art is buying it, wearing it or living with it.
Fantastic.
You already know what
art can do for you.
It makes you feel something.
It says something about
who you are. You may not
create it yourself,
but you recognise
its value. Imagine
taking that feeling
into everything you do.

I’m a businessperson,
not an artist.

REALLY??.
You started with an
idea that didn’t exist,
took a risk,
faced rejection,
made mistakes,
reinvented
yourself and kept
going. What do you
think creating
something out
of nothing is?

I take risks
every day.
That’s business
SO DOES THE ARTIST!
The difference is,
an artist
might take a
risk without knowing
whether the
world will
understand it.
Imagine bringing that
kind of courage
into a boardroom.

I need people
who think logically.
I can’t run a business on imagination.
OF COURSE!
.. you can’t.
But logic can only take
you so far when
you’re facing
something you’ve never
seen before.
That’s when imagination
becomes useful.

Artists are chaotic.
They’re unpredictable.
They’re all over
the place
Exactly.
We question things, break things,
try things and sometimes make a
complete mess. But what if the
thing disrupting your thinking is
the thing that changes everything?

I need to understand my audience. What makes people tick?
THEN STOP!
looking at them
as customers
for a moment.
Look at them
as human beings.
What do they feel?
What do they fear?
What do they
dream about?
You can’t connect
with people if
all you understand
is what they buy.

Failure costs money.
I can’t afford to get things wrong.
NEITHER CAN I!
But if you’re
so frightened of
getting it wrong
that you never
try anything
different, how
will you discover
what
could be right?

You’re an artist. What could you possibly teach me about running a business?
OF COURSE!
Perhaps nothing about your accounts, your operations
or your market.
But I might help you see a problem differently,
communicate an idea more honestly, take a
creative risk
or connect with
someone in
a way you
never considered.
All right.
What does art really have to do with business?

Everything that makes business human. Imagination. Courage. Emotion. Communication. Curiosity.
The ability to change, to connect and to create something that wasn’t there before. You call it business. I call it creating.

10 conversations about what could happen if business stopped seeing artists as suppliers, artists stopped seeing business as something beyond their reach, and both began to see each other as partners in creating something that matters.
